July 1940

Wednesday the 10th of July 1940.

The day officially recognized as the start of the Battle of Britain.

Day: First large scale engagements. Heavy afternoon battle over the large convoy (Bread) off Dover by more than 20 Do17`s from KG 2 with heavy fighter escort of Bf 109's from JG 51 and Bf 110's of ZG 26 were engaged by Spitfires and Hurricane's from Biggin Hill, Croydon and Manston. Over 100 aircraft engaged. 1 small ship was sunk. There were serious raids on Falmouth and Swansea by Ju 88's from Luftflotte 3. There were lighter attacks elsewhere along south and East Coast.
The first Czech Squadron was formed on this day (No 310 Squadron).
Night: Raids on Thames Valley, Home Counties, East Coast and Western Scotland.

Losses: Luftwaffe 13: Fighter Command 3.

Weather: It was overcast with thunder and rain generally, clearing later with showers in the South East.

Thursday the 11th of July 1940.
Day : Many recce sorties. Portland, Portsmouth and South-East convoy bombed. Further anti-shipping attacks by carried out by Luftflotte 3. RAF breaks up raids on Portland (Ju 87's from Stukageschwader 2 and 77, escorted by Bf 110's from ZG 76, and other aircraft from Luftflotte 3) and Portsmouth (He 111's of KG 55 and Bf 110's of ZG 76). Skirmishes continued all along the Channel coast
Night : Scattered raids from South West and South East, East Anglia and along the Yorkshire coast. .

Losses: Luftwaffe 21: Fighter Command 6.

Weather: Overcast, but bright showery weather in central areas and northern areas.

Friday the 12th of July 1940.
Day: There were attacks on shipping off the Isle of Wight, Norfolk-Suffolk and Aberdeen but they were mainly against a convoy off Oxfordness, by Do 17's (KG 2), He lll's (KG 53). No III Gruppe of JG 3 (Bf 109s) joined with JG 51 for fighter escort duties.
Night: Sporadic night raids in the Severn Estuary in the Bristol area and over South Wales.

Losses: Luftwaffe 9: Fighter Command 4.

Weather: Fog early, then overcast with thunder storms in places.

Saturday the 13th of July 1940.
Day: Shipping was attacked between Portland and Dover off the Isle of Wight, and 2 convoys off Harwich. An attack developed in the Dover Straits by St GI (Ju 87), with JG 51 providing escort. First major deployment of V-LG 1 with Bf 110's. Also attacked today were shipping at Norfolk-Suffolk and Aberdeen.
Night: Raids on Bristol and South Wales. Minelaying in the Thames Estuary.

Losses: Luftwaffe 9: Fighter Command 4.

Weather: Fog slow to clear with much mixed cloud from Midday

Sunday the 14th of July 1940.
Day: Scattered shipping attacks, the main one on a convoy off Eastbourne by IV/LG 1 (Ju 87), escorted by Bf 109's of III Gruppe from JG 3. Other convoys attacked off Dover and Swanage and Ramsgate airfield was bombed.
The British Government announced that Red Cross seaplanes were no longer immune from attack as they were being used for reconnaissance.
Night: Scattered raids, Bristol, Isle of Wight, Kent and Suffolk. and on various places in Kent, Essex and Suffolk.

Losses: Luftwaffe 3: Fighter Command 1.

Weather: Light cloud with good visibility.

Monday the 15th of July 1940.
Day: Shipping attacks all along the Channel, in the Thames estuary (KG 2), and as far up as The Wash (Norfolk coast). The R.A.F. breaks up various raids in the West Country and South Wales. LG 1 bombed the Westland Aircraft works and the runway at Yeovil. St Athan R.A.F. Station was attacked and the airfield cratered. The railway lines near Avonmouth were also damaged.
Night: Night minelaying in various waters.

Losses: Luftwaffe 5: Fighter Command 2

Weather: Low cloud and overcast.

Tuesday the 16th of July 1940.
Day: A quiet day little activity due to bad weather. Though reconnaissance flights in the morning lead to some shipping attacks later in the day.


No 232 Hurricane Squadron was formed on this day.

Night: North East coast, minelaying.

Losses: Luftwaffe 5 : Fighter Command 0.

Weather: Widespread fog, followed by very thick overcast.

Wednesday the 17th of July 1940.
Day: The I.C.I. Factory at Ardeer, Ayrshire was bombed by a few He 111's of KG 26. Light attacks on the South East coast. Shipping attacks further up east coast and off Scotland.


The first Polish R.A.F. Squadron, No 302 Polish Squadron was formed on this day.

R.A.F. first sights 'Seelöwe' (Sealion) activity taking place in occupied Channel ports.
Night: Light raids in south west. Mine laying in the Thames Estuary and the Bristol Channel by He 115's of Fliegerdivision IX

Losses: Luftwaffe 4: Fighter Command 2.

Weather: Less cloudy with light rain at times.

Thursday the 18th of July 1940.
Day: Raids on Montrose, Aberdeen, the Channel Ports, Lightships in the South East, coastguard stations and convoys off south coast. The Goodwin Lightship was Sunk an bombs were dropped on the Coastguard Station at St Margaret's Bay, Kent. Major engagements with 28 Me 109's by 15 Spitfire's of No 610 Squadron. Twelve Hurricane's of No 43 Squadron intercepted twenty-eight Ju 87's forming up to attack the radar station at Poling. At the beginning of their dives the Stuka's were at their most.


Adolf Galland was promoted to Major.

Night: Night reconnaissance and light raids in the South East.

Losses: Luftwaffe 5: Fighter Command 5.

Weather: Mainly overcast with occasional rain.

Friday the 19th of July 1940.
Day: There was a heavy raid on Dover by Ju 87`s with Bf 109 escorts. No 141 Squadron (Defiant's) tangled with 20, Bf 109`s of JG 2 in the Folkestone area with the loss of 6 aircraft., Selsey and Portland were also attacked. In the afternoon some 70 enemy bombers with fighter escort attacked Dover and were met by some 35 Hurricane's and Spitfire's.
Hitler gave his 'last appeal to reason' speech to Reichstag and announces the promotion of Göring to Reichsmarschall.

Göring was in conference with the commanders of Luftflotten 2 & 3. He remarked that "Fighting alone all these weeks on the Channel front, Jagdgeschwader 51 has already shot down 150 of the enemy's aircraft, quite enough to weaken him seriously Think now of all the bombers we can parade in the English sky. The few R.A.F. fighters will not be able to cope"

Night: The South coast and various ports between Plymouth and Harwich, and in and around Thames estuary are attacked during night.
