Tuesday the 13th of August 1940.
Day: 'Eagle Day' activity was postponed until 12.00 hours, but three main raids early on against the Eastchurch, Sheerness (Do 17's of KG 2), Odiham (Ju 88's of KG 54) and Portland (also KG 54). The second of these misses target altogether, and the effects of the others are not serious. The main offensive begins in the afternoon with a two-pronged attack by Luftflotten 2 and 3, spearheaded by Ju 88's from LG 1 and Ju 87's and Bf 110's from VIII Fliegerkorps. These attacks range all along the South Coast from Portland to the Thames estuary. The airfields damaged include Detling and Eastchurch (seriously), and Benson, Middle Wallop and Thorney Island (slightly). Ventnor radar is still out of action.
Night: Night raiding carried out across Midlands to South Wales and the west, and (by Luftflotte 5) against Northern Scotland.
Luftwaffe flew 1,485 sorties, Fighter Command flew 700 sorties.
Losses: Luftwaffe 34: Fighter Command 13.

Weather: Mainly fair after misty start; some thin, high cloud with drizzle at times.

Re: Battle of britain, dag na dag.

Thursday the 15th of August 1940.
Day: All three Luftflotten were in action in a maximum effort against airfields, radar stations and factories, including a heavy attack by seventy two He111's of KG 26 and twenty one Bf 110's of ZG 76 (Luftflotte 5) on the Newcastle area. They were intercepted by No 72 Squadron from Aklington. RAF Driffield was bombed and 10 Whitley bombers were destroyed on ground. Other attacks left Dishforth, Linton-on-Ouse and Usworth undamaged. Bridlington ammunition dump was blown up. In the South, factories at Rochester (Short Brothers and Pobjoy) and Croydon (Rollason and Redwing) were severely damaged. Hawkinge and Lympne airfields were badly damaged, the latter put out of action for about 48 hours. Other airfield targets include Manston, Martlesham Heath, Middle Wallop and West Malling. Croydon town was bombed in the first attack on London. Raids on Eastchurch spread into Kent, Surrey, Hampshire, Wiltshire, and the Isle of Wight, engaging 11 Group Fighter Command Squadrons. Today saw the most widespread activity of the battle.
There were 1,786 German sorties in 24 hours.
Fighter Command flew 974 sorties
Night: Widespread night raiding across entire central England from Swansea to the Wash.
Comment: This day is a turning point. German losses convince the Luftwaffe that air superiority is essential before all-out bombing can be successful. It also marks the virtual end of Luftflotte 5's offensive usefulness, so sparing the North such heavy attacks in future. It also marks the beginning of the end of the Ju 87's usefulness as a dive bomber and that of the Bf 110 as an escort fighter.

Losses: Luftwaffe 71: Fighter Command 34.

Weather: Fine and warm anticyclonic weather.

Saturday the 17th of August 1940.
Day: Despite ideal weather, reconnaissance flights only, as though to assess remaining fighter strength. Fighter Command's aircraft losses are serious enough, but losses of trained pilots is of more concern, and more re-training is initiated.
Night: Night raiding, over Midlands, Merseyside and South Wales, fairly light. Some mine laying also during night.

Losses: Luftwaffe 3: Fighter Command 1.

Weather: Fine, but hazy some light cloud in east.

Sgt S.J.Hobbs of No 235 Squadron was on night patrol on the 17th of August 1940 in a Blenheim I (N3540). The aeroplane overshot on landing at Thorney Island and crashed. It was written off but all the crew T.A.Maslen & H.W.Ficketts were unhurt.

Sunday the 18th of August 1940.
Day: Several waves of massed raiders are sent against southern airfields. This is the first use in battle of Kampfgruppe 100 as a pathfinder unit. Airfield targets include Biggin Hill, Croydon, Kenley (which was badly damaged), West Malling and Ford (severe damage at Ford). Gosport and Thorney Island were attacked later in the day. There was indiscriminate bombing in South-East Croydon and the Rollason factory was bombed again. Poling radar station was bombed and put out of action for a week. A large formation of Ju 87's was engaged by No's 152 - No 601 - No 602 and No 234 Squadron's. It was the last major use of the Ju 87's in the Battle of Britain, due to heavy losses, sixteen of them were shot down on this day.
Night: Nocturnal bombing started again over Central England, and further mine laying of South Wales, Bristol and East Anglia.

Losses: Luftwaffe 69 : Fighter Command 43 (including ground losses). Plus one Very brave chap by the name of B.Hancock.

Weather: Fine and clear at first, but soon overcast.
